Nimbin, Australia's Woodstock. The site of the 1973 Aquarius Festival, this small rural village became our capital of cannabis and the counter culture. Today it's all rather sad.
The aging hippies cling to the past even as their hair turns grey or disappears altogether. Still dressed in rainbow coloured tie-dyed clothes they can now attend the rainbow coloured Aged Care Centre. Meanwhile the counter culture has fully embraced the consumer culture. Tourists arrive in buses like visitors to the zoo. The locals meet their every need (to spend), staffing the numerous cafes and coffee shops as well as shops and galleries selling reminders, or remainders, of a bygone era.
I too came for a look, a reminiscence. I couldn't leave quick enough.
