The Newmarket Hotel was established in 1847 on one of Adelaide’s most prominent corners, the corner of North Terrace and West Terrace. The present grand building was erected in 1884. By the 1970s it had become a discothèque and nightclub. The venue closed in 2017 with plans for a 24-storey residential and retail tower to be erected on the site.
Today, in late 2023, the building remains vacant its grandeur diminished with overgrown plants, broken windows and torn, fading billboards.
